To Gary Moore: When I was a kid in the 50s and 60s, my family (Wylie, Mary Ann, Alan, Steven, Larry) vacationed every summer at Walt and Eva Bryant’s resort–it was named North Bay Resort–on Mule Lake (local town address back then was Longville, MN about 7 miles away; Pine River was maybe 25 miles away).

Walt and my father worked together at the Goodyear Tire Factory in Topeka, KS (until as I recall your great uncle was injured). They were founding members of Local 307 Rubber Workers Union at the factory along with others. After Walt could no longer work at Goodyear, he and Eva began and built North Bay Resort.

If memory is correct, the resort first had 3 two-bedrooom cabins (identical to what is in the photo except the side facing Mule Lake had a big picture window in the living/dining/kitchen area on one side of the cabin). Walt and Eva expanded the resort to 5 cabins–four for guests and the remaining one where Walt and Eva lived during the season when they were open.

Besides swimming and fishing, one fond memory I have is a smelt fish fry before weekly guests left. Our family spent either 2 or 3 weeks at the resort each year. It was great fun! Your great uncle and aunt were exceptional gracious hosts.

In the late 60’s early 70’s my Great Uncle Walter Bryant was owner/operator of a resort on Mule Lake I believe it was called Pine River Resort On Mule Lake and when I was around 12yrs old my grandparents took me and my older brother with them on vacation and spent a couple of weeks there. The cabin in this photo looks similar to the one we stayed in. I have great memories of the time I spent with my grandparents fishing and swimming.
