Spent many family vacations at Sunset View resort! It was in the late 1940’s to early 1950’s. I remember the store at the hill top. The elderly Indian who sat outside. One day, after many conversations shared. He invited me to go to his teepee. I ran asking my parents if I could go. They stated yes- It was such an experience! I had so many questions to ask this elderly man probably well into his eighties! I ran with local Indian children. We wore swimsuits under outside clothing so we could take swims when desired. Powwows were fun to be invited to evenings. One special boy Johnny Coleman was very special. He gave me beaded bracelets. We spent many hours shared. Being a city girl from Chicago IL. I loved feeling free in MN. I remember Bear Island. The Bergar family inviting me into their home often. I played their piano. When Mr Berger’s wife was ill. I rode with him to the hospital. I remember seeing a big Babe the Ox statue along our route.
My family also went to sunset view leech lake for years!! So many great memories! It was a huge family tradition to go on our annual 1-2 week family fishing vacation!! We’d rent those cabins year after year! I miss it dearly!
