I remember Pine River so fondly. During the first week of August for 12 years my extended family vacationed on Lake Ada. We were coming from Minneapolis, so you had to go through the middle of Pine River to get there. When we arrived in Pine River we were all so excited. This felt like home because it became so familiar. We would shop at Carl’s Supermarket, the bakery, the hardware store / gift shop, and Pfeiffer Drug — such a great place. And down by the river near the swinming area there was a “drive-in” where we could get burgers and root beer. It may have been an A&W. Does anyone remember Pine River back in the day? Thanks for sharing if you do. — Patty Wahl, Minneapolis
Out first family vacation leaving Illinois in 1964 was spent there on the back lake. I remember smelling the pine sol used to clean the cabin and thought it was the knotty pine walls that smelled so good. Also fed every chipmunk that came to visit on the cabin stoop. My Dad taught me how to clean fish in the small fish house but never road in the airplane that landed on the water and gave tours. Always took a ride to a local Indian Pow Wow. Also my mom and I sat on the pier soaking our feet avoiding the crayfish pinches. The next time we went up there my parents friends from Cannon Falls joined us for a few days. That might have been the time my father sold my uncle’s German Luger from WW II to “Jeepers”. I don’t have a lot of photos but I do have some and wish I could post them somehow. I am 68 now and have fished from Lake of the Woods in Canada, south to the Atlantic ocean in Florida, west to the Black Hills of South Dakota. I won 2 Salmon Unlimited Tournaments on Lake Michigan all because of my first family vacation at Lakeview Camp was my inspiration and the memories will NEVER fade.
My parents and I stayed at that resort also many years ago. Wonderful memories of fishing, swimming, bonfires , plane rides
and new friends. I knew David, Paul, Janice, Ollie and Gilbert,
I’m 68 years old. My family stayed at this resort from the early 50s. The last time I was there was 1995. We were there every year for at least a week, usually two. It was the only place we called “vacation”. The owner at that time his name was Jeepers, well we called a Jeepers ( I can’t remember his real name). Several years ago I did drive through that area, and I ran into his son, Paul. We chatted for a while and talked about old times. Terry Harbes tharbes@gmail.com
